DeWitt High School Student Voice

I have a new acronym to propose to Mr. Webster —TGISB.

What does it stand for? Thank Goodness It’s Spring Break! The entire school has seemed to be going mad with anticipation for the last two weeks; needless to say, it didn’t make for great focus come nine weeks’ tests! I have never been so glad for the bell in my life as I was last Friday.

But now, with a week of free time on my hands, I’m left to ponder to whom I should give thanks for this. I set off on my quest via the world wide web, and what I found had me rather surprised!

It turns out that Spring Break has been a tradition since the ancient Greeks (who knew those guys knew how to party). It all started with a bunch of teenagers (who else could start such a great festivity) and Socrates. The people in Greece brought Socrates a problem: come spring, the teenagers were going nuts! Whether it was the better weather or a surplus of grape products (if you know what I mean), no one can say.

At any rate, Socrates decided that if he couldn’t take the party out of the teenagers, then he might as well attach some religious significance to it. It therefore became a rite of passage that all teenagers be allowed a period of time for ā€œwild behaviorā€ every Spring Break. Voila! Spring Break is born!

From then on, it has been celebrated in some form or another. The early Christian church tried to stomp it out since it was a pagan tradition, but had only minimal success. Adopting it as their own Christian holiday didn’t work either, so the mission was eventually completely disbanded. The partying continued in Europe, but Americans didn’t pick up on it until after World War I. Soldiers brought it home, and with the opening of an Olympic-size pool in Florida, Americans transformed the holiday into something completely our own.

Now, of course, you all know that Spring Break is not only associated with warm weather, but with mass partying as well. And while the wildest thing I have up my sleeve is babysitting, I will enjoy watching MTV to see other teenagers make complete fools of themselves.

You see, our generation has a new tradition: public embarrassment. It is one on which television stations are only all to glad to capitalize. Turn on MTV any time March through April, and you are liable to see high school students falling down, singing off key, dancing in their swimsuits, or performing various other humiliating acts.

It’s enough to make me be glad that I’m at home. Enjoying other people’s hilarious-at-the-time-yet-embarrassing-when-Mom-sees-the-video moments is plenty of fun for me!
