DeWitt Chief of Police Urges Citizens to Practice Social Distancing

by Charlotte Purdy

COVID-19. That dreaded virus that’s been covering the news outlets and social media for weeks. It’s real and it is now in Arkansas County! Practicing social distancing is one of the most important things citizens can do to prevent the spread of the virus, and Chief Bobo with the DeWitt Police Department stated that the PD is doing everything they can to abide by the CDC requirements.

City Hall is closed to the public, but the DeWitt Police Department is still working and ensuring that the citizens of DeWitt are safe. Officers going on duty are required to clock in to work, but with the closing of the building, the officers are “clocking in” visually by the dispatchers who then process them as on or off duty.

Chief Bobo stated, “We are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe and healthy. Our officers are equipped with face masks, gloves, and protective eyewear.” Bobo went on to state, “They are still patrolling and answering all calls. We will continue to serve our community the best we can.”

Chief Bobo expressed the importance of practicing social distancing. Staying at least six feet from others will help prevent the spread of the virus. Bobo also stated that no gatherings of 10 or more people will be permitted. When asked, “What if there is a gathering with more than the suggested amount?” He stated, “We will begin by asking them to leave and follow the CDC guidelines.” Gatherings of 10 or more are prohibited until further notice.

Chief Bobo addressed the city’s curfew. There have been no changes to the curfew at this time, but that may change depending on the cases that come into Arkansas County, especially into DeWitt. “We want to keep things as normal as possible, but we will make changes if they are necessary,” he said.
