DeWitt School Board Approves Face Mask Resolution

August 11, 2021

With a 5-1 majority vote, the DeWitt School Board approved a resolution regarding face coverings of students, staff, and visitors during the Covid-19 Global Pandemic.

An excerpt from the resolution states:

"WHEREAS, This school district, to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and to greatly reduce student and staff quarantines, which have proved to be a disruption to in person learning and school activities, will require students, staff, and visitors to its campuses to comply with the following:
a. All students, grades K through 12 shall be required to wear a face covering (which covers the nose and mouth and is provided by the student's parent or guardian) indoors when physical distancing of six (6) feet is not possible or practical (face coverings not required outside). Whether physical distancing is appropriate or other exception is applicable shall be determined by a teacher, principal or other school administrator.
b. All staff (certified and classified) shall be required to wear a face covering (which covers the nose and mouth and is provided by the employee) when physical distancing of six (6) feet is not possible or practical, while working indoors at school (face coverings not required outside). Staff may be exempted from this resolution by a school principal or the Superintendent of Schools.
c. All visitors to school campuses shall be required to wear a mask or face covering while present in a school building when physical distancing of six (6) feet is not possible or practical. If any exception above is applicable, the principal or school administrator may deny entrance into the building, facility or other area of a school campus if physical distancing is not possible or practical.
d. The school may provide face coverings at its discretion for those who do not have masks; and

NOW THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED THAT this resolution shall remain in effect from the date of the signatures below and is allowable under law. The DeWitt Board of Education will review this resolution on a regular basis to consider if modifications are warranted by a decrease or an increase in positive COVID-19 cases within the DeWitt School District and Arkansas County.

Signed and made effective this 10th day of August 2021."
