by Dawn Teer

In addition to the Candidate Forum that was presented by the Stuttgart Chamber of Commerce and Southeast Arkansas Broadcasters, the DeWitt Era-Enterprise wanted to help inform the public about the candidates. After putting together several questions, they were submitted to all candidates.

Please list your name and the ward you are running for.
My name is Michal Johnson. (Pronounced Michelle). I’m running for a seat on the Stuttgart School Board to Represent Zone 2.

What made you want to throw your hat in?
I want to be part of the Team to help all students, educators, and our community. If elected to be on the Board, I feel that I will be a voice for all with an open mind and bring forth goals to support the education of all students.

How do you feel you can move our school board forward?
Some issues in our District are parental involvement for our students. Secondly, I believe we could do a better job of listening to our educators. Third, there is a need to increase pay for all of our staff. Last, but not least., I believe in strong extra-curricular activities which get and keep our children more involved. This can be before or after-school activities.

What do you feel are issues facing the school district? How do you propose to help solve them?
Becoming a part of the Board will give me an opportunity to assist with establishing an updated mission plan and then finding a way to execute it.

What do you feel is the responsibility of the school board?
Our responsibility as the Board will be to put our student's best interests first while providing improved learning for all your students.

Do you have children in the district? If so, where do they attend?
I have one student who attends the Stuttgart Public School District. His name is Kameron Harper. He will be a 2023 Stuttgart Graduate. I am a supporter of athletics as Kam is a member of the Ricebird football, basketball, and soccer teams.

Can you be fair to all children?
I will be fair to all students as a Board member. I come to the board as a former Substitute, Bus Driver and Van Driver. I have also worked with my Youth at my Church, First Baptist. All the children I have worked with and encountered, I also consider my children.

What strengths will you bring to the board, if elected?
I will do all that I can as a member of the Stuttgart School Board, to ensure students achieve their goals to be successful in their future endeavors.

Can you set personal feelings aside and work for the district as a whole?
Setting aside my personal differences will be of no challenge as I look forward to becoming a team player and working for the good of the majority.
