Flags on Display at DeWitt Cemetery in Observance of Memorial Day

by Charlotte Purdy

Johnny and Audrey Purdy noticed a cemetery in Oklahoma that had large flags displayed for Memorial Day and they wanted to do their part to have larger flags placed at the graves of service members to honor them on Memorial Day right here in DeWitt.

Johnny, a Vietnam Veteran, was very active in the Brown-Wright American Legion Post #158 and along with other Legion members, Auxiliary members, and volunteers, each Memorial Day they walked the rows and placed flags at each service members grave.

Community members who have driven by the DeWitt Cemetery have noticed the flags flying freely in the wind on this Memorial Day. With more than 300 service members buried in the cemetery, and a list created by American Legion Auxiliary Unit #158 members, it's truly a sight to see!

However, that list continues to grow, and sometimes service members are missed due to recent passing or no grave marker. Audrey is asking that if you have a service member at the DeWitt Cemetery who does not have a flag on their grave, to please call her at (870) 830-2379 so that they can be added to the list.
