4H Holds STEM Day at UA Rice Research

by Dawn Teer

Several Stuttgart and DeWitt 4H clubs showed up at the UA Rice Research Center for STEM day. The students showed off their various projects that they had made while studying STEM.
Erin Hayes, a leader of the Night Owls group, said this was an opportunity for them to practice public speaking skills and demonstrate their knowledge of something that is of interest to them.
They began with a welcome from Katy and Collin Smith, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Jesslyn Williams. Teegan Henry led them in the 4H Pledge and the camp song, “Boom Chicka Boom”.
Celeste Smith, a leader also, talked to them about safety and housekeeping for the day.
Collin Smith then showed them how to make a straw rocket launch (Forces and Motion) he passed them out and each of the students practiced making the rocket launch. Jesslyn Williams then demonstrated milk magic (Surface Tension). Allison Hayes demonstrated how to make Borax Crystals (Geology). Katy Smith made a weather windsock craft. Emma Hayes then demonstrated how to make Ice Cream in a bag. They sung songs while the ice cream was freezing.
Next they moved outside for songs and an Air Rocket Launch by Collin Smith. Teegan Henry then demonstrated how to make an Elephant Toothpaste Explosion. They transitioned back inside for a pressure vacuum demonstration by Charlotte Bowen.
Final remarks were made with an invitation for those who weren’t members, to become members of 4H.
